RTD: Memorial Day Wrap-up, Summer Plans, Open Mic

FlagParadeWhile the official day (and weekend) for honoring and remembering the service men and women who gave their lives for the United States and the freedoms we enjoy on a daily basis is behind us, in no way should it be over.

For this week’s Round Table Discussion (RTD), I’d not only like to talk about what you did this past weekend, but also take the time to share stories about our loved ones who made the ultimate sacrifice. Nothing too dramatic or drawn out, but simply the sharing of pictures and stories, maybe talk about cherished memorabilia that’s passed down in your family, and just overall what Memorial Day means to you and your family.

Beyond that, how did you spend this weekend and who did you spend it with? Is there a tradition you keep or a party you always attend/host? Do you bring the kids to a local parade? Do you visit a cemetery and pay your respects to the fallen?

Memorial Day weekend is known as the unofficial kickoff to summer. Everyone makes a big effort to get their yards in order (mostly) so that the rest of the summer can be spent enjoying the fruits of our labor with family and friends. The last day of school is also right around the corner and parents, teachers, and most of all, children, couldn’t be more excited to swap hallways and classrooms for backyards and beaches.

ShoesWhat are your summer plans? Again, is there something you do annually or are you and your family doing something new this year? Beaches or lakes? Traditional games like horseshoes or the latest “lawn game” that requires you to throw some sort of small object at a larger, more stationary object with an arbitrary scoring system? Grilling, smoking, potluck, or catering? At what point during the summer do you typically hit your wall and long for the days in which the kids are back in school and out from underneath your constant care?

And, since I’m sure we are all going to be tired this week and might want a little break from our typical format, I’d like to open up the platform to you. What’s on your mind right now? Parenting, summer, work, sports or otherwise? Submit a question in the comments below or send me an email — bmarmo@dadsroundtable.com.

Then be sure to join us this Wednesday at 6pm PST / 9pm EST on Twitter to share your thoughts on Memorial Day, summer plans, and whatever else might be on your mind.
