RTD: Managing the Fall Sports Frenzy For Our Kids

Football season is back on at every level (Go Seahawks!), which means that all is right in America.  When this time of year comes around, every American family is thrust into the frenzy of Thursday Night Football, Friday Night Lights, Saturday College Gameday, NFL Sunday, and Monday Night Football.  I loved every minute of  my football career that spanned 13 years of my life.

It could be easy for me to push my kids into football culture every year, but would that be the best thing for them?  The worst thing we can do as parents is impose our youthful dreams on our kids without giving them the chance to discover their own interests.  My 3-year-old loves bowling and my 6-year-old had a great first year on the swim team.  However, if it was up to my daughter, she would be doing all the sports, all the arts, and all the activities.  Our kids should be explore and discover their interests.

So where do we strike that balance as parents?  When do we push for kids to try something, and say no to too much?

Consider the kid in the video below.

What activities or sports do your kids do in the Fall?  How do you manage or help them manage their Fall activity schedules?

About ManvDadhood

I am a man, and by my wife’s standards that makes me flawed. My challenge to parents, and to myself, is not to teach my kids about the kind of person I hope them to become one day, but to become that person today.
