Traveling With Kids

This could have been the last picture I ever took of my son

I honestly thought my son was dying.

Two hours out to sea on a luxury cruise liner headed for the Bahamas and our lives were being turned upside down. My son was turning blue and seizing right on my lap and we had no idea what was going on. Something like this had never happened to us before and here we are with no land in sight.

We love to travel. Our kids have come with is wherever we go. Our thought is, if it’s a place that we would like to go to, so will our kids. They’ve been to Disney World too many times to count, but they’ve also been to places like Germany, Italy, and France. We have been told that were crazy and that the kids will never remember any of it. While true, WE will remember all of it.

So many of my friends have been scared off of traveling with kids. One said before his first was born that he wasn’t going anywhere for the next 18 years. Another just told me that he is taking the kids on their first vacation in EIGHT YEARS. I know that traveling with kids is not the easiest thing to do, but to never take your kid on vacation is just foreign to me.

We haven’t slowed down since that incident on the high seas seven years ago. It was scary as hell, but everything turned out OK. There are certain things we learned we needed to do after that, and things we still do to this day.

Do you travel with your kids or do you dread more of the same of your so called vacation? How do you plan? Where do you go? How do you prepare for the worst?

Help us break it all down this Wednesday at 9:00 PM Eastern Time on Twitter for our weekly #DadsRT chat. Bring your travel guides.

About Daddysincharge

After 15 years as a News Photographer in the fast paced world of television news, I am now knee deep in Legos and laundry as the stay at home dad to to little boys. It was my choice to stay at home, so don't look at me like I am some kid of freak show. We're all parents just trying to raise our kids the right way. Some might be better at it than others, but if our kids love us for who we are, who cares.

  1. We’ve actually put off traveling for awhile until we work up our nerve. Distance from hospitals is a definite concern, but also just being THAT GUY on the airplane is the other thing. I’m sure we’ll make it out there before too long, just not sure when that’ll be.

  2. I have a 14 month old and so far he’s been to Chicago (for me to attend a conference), Ocean City, MD and Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Yes, it takes a little more preparation to bring your child with you. However, I think it’s a great lesson in remembering to fit your child into YOUR life, instead of changing your entire life to be about him (or her).

This is what I think...
