5 Things I Learned in France

I recently spent 11 glorious days in France.

I’m telling you that it’s beautiful.

For the most part it really was a trip of a lifetime.  The south of France is one of the most beautiful places that I have ever been and to share it with my wife and kids was something that I will never forget.  I had been to France before, four years ago, but I had never given much thought to how different parents are there compared to the United States.  Last January I read Huffington Post article about how French parents, moms in particular, are way better at this whole parenting business.  Maybe it wasn’t supposed to sound that way, but that is the way that I took it.

Four years ago we were that typical American family that catered to the every need that our kids had.  All of France was probably looking at us in disgust as our kids would tell us to jump, and we would ask, “how high?”  I really am surprised that they let us back into the country after that last visit.  Surprisingly we were not on a “no fly” list especially since we failed to pay a hospital bill that we were given after my son had a seizure.  I thought French medicine was free?  Apparently not, but I couldn’t read the bill so it went unpaid.

This time though I went in with an eye on just what makes the French parents better than us.  Since I spent a total of 11 days I find myself fully qualified to over generalize on an entire population.  The following is what I came up with:

Some might be better at it than others, but if our kids love us for who we are, who cares.

Kids that age peeing is just as odd for us, some parents don’t teach their kids well. However naked kids are all over the place, for now parents are comfortable not everybody is a pedophile. It’s changing though.

Again the parents smokin around kids is just awful parents making awful choices, frowned upon here too.
