Kids of all ages can help out on this backyard project, and it can be as simple or as fancy as you want. The idea of campfires and roasting s’mores will make being outside a lot more fun  on cool late summer nights—and it pays off even more as the weather gets colder. For a  basic fire pit, all you really need is a few shovels, some gravel, and a ring of large rocks. You can build a  nicer version for under $100 by ringing the pit with staggered concrete blocks and placing a charcoal grate inside.
