Prank Week: Red Robe

Never in my life have I ever been so completely fooled.

Dad is Shocked

Essential Background Information

My wife is generous. Santa Generous.  Not just with money but with time and effort.

If it’s your birthday, she makes cheesecake and your favorite meal.  For Christmas exchanges she hand-makes wreaths and extravagant stockings.   Having a baby? She buys exquisite fabric and sews the most amazing tag-blankets you’ve ever seen.

People are always appreciative of her efforts but they don’t REALLY understand like I do. I’m the one who sees her working for hours on gifts when others would stop at Walmart to pick something up at the last minute.

  • My wife tells me she is making a housecoat for her mother.
  • Over $100 of the most amazing red fabric is purchased.
  • Over 50 hours of painstaking labor is poured into creating the Red Robe.

Christmas Morning.

Only my wife and her mom were in on the prank.

Unlike most husbands, I love my Mother-in-Law. In my mind she was truly worthy of this very thoughtful gift.  I was so excited for her to get the robe because she can sew and would sincerely appreciate the time, effort, and craftsmanship.   It would be very emotional, I thought, a family Oscar moment.  That is why I was so completely and utterly shocked by her “reaction” to the Red Robe.

“Well, this is way too big and I don’t like red!”  The room went silent. Mouths and eyes wide open.

“Here James,” she said as she threw it at me, “you might as well have this because it’s your size and your favorite color.”

I was so confused it didn’t dawn on me that I had been pranked.  Before shock had time to convert to rage, my wife put her hand on my shoulder and said, “I made this for you.”

I was going to but was afraid it would look creepy to have me posing with a robe. LOL. I can if the readers demand it.
