Nostalgia makes things seem cooler

My kids and I were sitting around this weekend and I was reminiscing about days gone by. I was telling them about how I used to wake up on Saturday mornings to watch cartoons. I would sit in front of the TV for hours with a bowl of cereal and I would stare.

I told them how my mom would get frustrated at us while she tried to clean. We learned to tune out the sound of the vacuum cleaner. Or we just turned up the volume on the tv.  It drove her nuts!! But we weren’t about to give up our Saturday Morning Cartoons!  80s and 90 TV shows were some of the best out there!

Today kids have it easy.  With YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, and Cable, they can access cartoons 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  They don’t understand the struggle.  We had to wait for those good shows.  How many of you remember watching TGIF on ABC?   Oh how, I miss hanging out with the Tanner family on Friday nights.  Then waking up to the best cartoons ever on Saturday mornings!!!

But were they actually the best cartoons ever?

Netflix has a slew of old cartoons available now. Just waiting to be streamed and binge watched for hours upon hours! It makes me want to go out and buy a giant box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, a gallon of milk and just spend an entire day on my couch.  But, I have three kids and that would never fly with my wife.

My kids and I were scrolling through the options and I saw Voltron.  I used to love that show.  So I put on an episode to watch with the kids.  I was super excited. BEST SHOW EVER!!!!!! The theme song came on, I was pumped! The kids were getting into it too.  They saw the Tigers coming together to form Voltron and they thought it was awesome.

Then the cartoon started. The first five minutes felt like hours.  The dialogue was so slow and so boring. I was actually kind of embarrassed.  My kids looked at me with that “You said this would be cool” look.  I wanted to hide my face.  I tried to talk it up and convince them of how cool it was.  “The tigers, they combine, they make a giant robot. It’s VOLTRON!”  It had no effect.  We had to change it.

A few cartoons later I had to give up my position as clicker commander. My cartoon picking privileges were revoked by the kids and I had to sulk quietly to myself. What happened? Why wasn’t it as cool as I remember?

I’m not going to lie, there are still some awesome shows out there from when I was a kid.  Transformers, and the not so popular rip off the Go-Bots, are still cool.  ALF will always be a great show too.  I am a proud member of the Midnight Society! I will forever hold a place in my heart for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!!!!

The sad truth I had to admit was, Nostalgia has a way of making things seem cooler than they were.  Not everything is as great as we remember. Then again, it may not be the cartoons that we remember as being cool.

Maybe it was that sense of freedom that came from not having a care in the world on a Saturday morning. No bills, no jobs, no yard work and none of the other stress that comes along with adult life.  Maybe it’s not the shows we are nostalgic for, but it’s the simpler times we miss.

Sometimes we have to allow ourselves to let go and get lost in nothing for a short period of time. That’s the best part about having kids.  When we feel nostalgic for our childhood we can just hang out with our kids and ignore the world for a bit.  Just don’t get your hopes up when it comes to cartoons.
