Why They Kneel

I am a Black male.

Football has been a part of my life for 81% of my life.  I love the game, and will watch my Washington Huskies with pride this season.  The NFL is another issue.  The love of the game is lost.  There is too much decided about the game before the player take the field, and it’s being misunderstood.  So I would like to offer another perspective… mine.

I am a Black male.

I served two years at the Air Force Academy.  two of my brothers served in the military.  My uncle was a naval pilot.  My dad and my step dad served.  My grandfather was a Command Sergeant Major.  My grandmother graduated from college.  My mother and one of my brothers holds a post graduate degree.  I, myself, have a Master’s Degree in education.

I spent 12 years working in education in Special Education.  I have traveled the country, and the world.  I have taken my children to Central America to volunteer at a medical mission, and give to a world that can benefit from their privilege of being born American.  I am a Christian, but not in the way Americans define it.  I am introverted.

I am a Black male.

I am well-spoken.  I can code-switch better than anyone I know.  I believe in the pursuit of truth and justice.  I am a lot of things, but you have to give me the benefit of the doubt to learn those things.  I used to believe that because I was all the things above, I was safe from blatant racism and prejudice.  Not that it wasn’t there, but I could walk away with my life.  I am not certain of my odds anymore.  I am more afraid of a traffic stop in America than literally any other country in the world.

I am a Black male.

And because of that one easily-seen fact, I am seen as something… not someone.

It is systematic.

That is why they kneel.

The Beginning
About ManvDadhood

I am a man, and by my wife’s standards that makes me flawed. My challenge to parents, and to myself, is not to teach my kids about the kind of person I hope them to become one day, but to become that person today.
