School in June is a Cruel Beast

Once upon a time I thought about becoming a poet.  I used a burn a lot of incense back then.  Writing poetry taught me to say more with less and helped improve my songwriting immensely.  I love poetry but I am certainly not a poet.  I’m a dabbler.

On this hot June day, as I was cleaning up digital files, I stumbled upon this poem I wrote a few years ago for an end-of-the-year school newsletter.  Enjoy.

School in June: A Student’s Lament by James Hudyma

School in June is a cruel beast
It laughs as we writhe in its heat
Makes deals with the clouds
Lets the rain pour down
On track meets and field trips and recess
School in June is a nasty, cruel beast

School in June is a friend of the sun
The beautiful, shining, evil sun
Melts our brains
With its powerful rays
During math class and social studies and language arts
School in June is a friend of the wicked sun

Assessments in June are poisoned darts
They force us to explain and demonstrate
When it takes everything we’ve got
Just to stay sane
We finish projects and final exams and performance tasks
Assessments in June are razor-sharp, poisoned darts

Teachers in June are a heartless lot
Get back to work!  Stay in your spot!
In their torture chambers called classrooms
They prolong June’s harsh burn
With lessons and lectures and talking in turn
Teachers in June are a merciless, heartless lot

The last day of June is far away
Just out of reach yet so far, far away
We strain and grasp
But it always evades
Dodging and ducking and dipping and diving and dodging
The last day of June is a million miles further than far, far away

God, if you make June go away, I promise to eat all my vegetables.

God, if you make June go away, I promise to eat all my vegetables.
